Dianne Davis, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Varina Howell Davis Chapter from Houston, Texas discovers the house that was the birthplace of Gen. Edmund Kirby Smith, the last Confederate general to surrender. His mother, Frances Kirby Smith, lived in this house during the early part of the Union occupation of St. Augustine until she was exiled from the city for spying. The house is now the St. Augustine Historical Society research library. The collection is open to the public for research and is composed of files and books on Florida history, including those on the Civil War period and the Kirby Smith family. There are two bronze statues in the garden and a plaque inside commemorating its famous former resident. "I enjoy the peace and good feelings of the garden and often stop in for a moment of reflection when I am filming in the Aviles Street area," said filmmaker Bruce Merwin.
Dianne Davis, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Varina Howell Davis Chapter from Houston, Texas looks over the St. Augustine, FL monument to William Wing Loring (1818-1886). After valiantly serving the Confederate Army in the War Between the States, Loring served for nine years in the army of Egypt. He joined about fifty Union and Confederate veterans who had been recommended by William Tecumseh Sherman. "There is a park on the west side of the Government House where I used to perform in Flagler College Summer stock theatre in the late 70's, and in this park is a Confederate monument. It was fun rediscovering the park with a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy," said the filmmaker Bruce Merwin.

Dan Holiday and filmmaker Bruce Merwin of St. Augustine, Florida have been working on a project to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the naming of Florida. "Dan has been the one to thank for creating a buzz and reminding many of us about Juan Ponce de León's landing and naming of La Florida in 1513. Everyone I filmed Dan speaking with seemed to be unaware that N.E. Florida and St. Johns County is privileged to be near the spot where this great Spanish explorer landed in 1513 and that we should make some hube bub about it. Dan is a remarkable man to film and I have been honored to work with him to uplift the great Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León", said the filmmaker Merwin. Recorded live in December 2011 by St. Augustine filmmaker Bruce Merwin. "Katherine Archer is a wonderful musician, she scored some interstitial music for me on my latest documentary film. She came in to the studio, put the headphones on, watched the picture and laid down the tracks, very easy and fun, a great person to work with. In The Florida Song you can see Katherine's easy going manner. To capture her work I went in late in her last set one night in December, set up and recorded her performance. That was it one number, although I think you are actually hearing two songs, you'll have to ask her about it," said Merwin.
Nutty Squirrel Left Paw to Heart - Right Paw to Heart and A Happy New Year OK, OK so there are many magical things that escape our eyes. As we observe life it go's by so fast some time. In the edit suite I am constantly reminded of the beauty, splendor and magic all around us in the world. Here with Nutty Squirrel I am reminded of how fellow travelers communicate or seem to communicate. While filming a squirrel in St. Augustine, a very busy squirrel, it seemed to me that she was trying to communicate with my camera. She was not afraid of the camera, maybe because it was far enough away but at a certain instant it seemed to signal with her paw. Magic. It melts my heart to see a creature do this and thought it may touch you and your friends as well. Many of us have seen such things in nature but are reluctant to mention them or speak of them. Please take a moment to comment here and share with us your encounters.

We're Glad Your Here with St. Augustine Mayor Joe Boles tells some of Lincolnville's rich black history. Filmed by St. Augustine filmmaker Bruce Merwin on December 3, 2011. St. Benedict the Moor Church is located at 86 M.L King Avenue in Lincolnville, St. Augustine, FL. Who was St. Benedict? He was the patron saint of African-Americans, was beatified by Pope Benedict XIV in 1743 and canonized in 1807 by Pope Pius VII, he is remembered for his patience and understanding. In 1890 that certain property on Central Avenue, (now 86 M. L. King Avenue) St. Augustine, Florida, was deeded to Bishop John Moore whose plans were to erect a church, school and other buildings whose income would support a resident priest. On February 5, 1911 the Most Reverend Bishop William J. Kenney dedicated the Church of St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church and from this date through 1914 the church was a mission in charge of Cathedral Clergy. The first rector of St. Benedict was Father James B. Albert, SSJ, whose work still bears fruit in St. Augustine. On February 5, 2011, St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church and all of St. Augustine had cause to celebrate their 100th Anniversary.
HELP BRING BACK A FLORIDA RIVER is a film about the Summer Haven, one of the most unique, outstandingly beautiful areas on the east coast of Florida. The historic homes of Summer Haven, built to face the River, are the oldest beach houses on State record, dating back to the 1890's. The Summer Haven River, a natural, thriving and historic waterway, has ceased to flow due to the massive sand infiltration caused by a significant ocean breach at Old A1A. This occurred in 2008 after three sequential major storm events. This process has closed the area to sport fishing, commercial oystering, kayaking and recreational boating. In the past, sea turtles, dolphin, many species of fish and manatees frequently traveled and foraged in the 2.3 miles of River. The oysters and the habitats they provide are dying, along with the spawning ground for many species of fish. Estuarine areas for wading birds and other wildlife are being depleted. Public boat launching areas are being affected. Kayak and fishing guides once used the River on a daily basis. We believe that the lack of flow in the Summer Haven River is contributing to the shoaling of historic Matanzas Inlet. Restoration of the Summer Haven River is not a new project. Citizens have been asking for help since 2008. Here are some of their stories filmed by St. Augustine filmmaker Bruce Merwin. Join us and be a friend of the Summer Haven River. Our goal is for the sand to be removed from the River and placed back on the beach. The dunes should be reinforced and vegetated. There should be a permitted plan in place to immediately solve any future emergency conditions. The Summer Haven River has recreational, economic, historic and environmental value to the citizens of, and visitor's to, St. Johns County and it should be restored. We sincerely appreciate your interest in the Summer Haven River and encourage you to contact us. Go to: friendsofthesummerhavenriver.org.
